Home Front: Diaries of a Vermont military family

Posted By on Thu, Mar 7, 2013 at 10:00 AM

As I've been writing about being a military family in Vermont, I realize that I often talk about the wives of deployed members, about the kids. As a military wife and stay-at-home mom, that just happens to be my point of view. But I would be remiss if I didn't talk about all the others who are supporting our military men and women.

First off, that last sentence reminds me to say that the women serving in our military deserve major props. They put themselves out there alongside the burly military men. They prove that women have what it takes to get the job done. They leave their children for months at a time. They let someone else take over the nurturing and the boo-boo kissing. As a mom, I appreciate that sacrifice so very much. Military women ROCK. The people who take care of their children while they are away ROCK. I take my hat off to them all.

The single military members who serve are supported by their mothers and fathers, sisters and brothers, cousins and friends. There are people who are paying their bills, taking care of their pets and getting together what they need to file their taxes. Just as there are sons and daughters waiting for their hero to come home, there are nieces and nephews missing their favorite aunts or uncles.

Please join me in thanking all of the family members who are left without their loved ones. Join me in remembering every service member who serves this country. They don't all have someone telling their story.
