Nature Playground
The Vermont Institute of Natural Science (VINS) was awarded $1,700 from the Stowe High School SHAPE (Students Helping Achieve Philanthropic Excellence) Program. The grant will help fund the building of a new Nature Playground and Outdoor Classroom at the VINS Nature Center in Quechee, Vermont.
The SHAPE Program was founded in 2001 by the Mark J. Gordon Foundation. Its mission is to engage high school students in philanthropic and leadership activities to positively impact the quality of life within their communities. The SHAPE Program at Stowe High School began in the fall of 2007. The program is directed by the students, who are trained and develop skills to make well-informed grant decisions.
The first phase of the VINS Nature Playground and Outdoor Classroom at the VINS Nature Center will begin this summer, with final construction slated for 2009. The Nature Playground and Outdoor Classroom will reinforce exploratory learning through activities that stimulate the imagination in a safe, structured outdoor environment. The playground will be specifically designed to further engage young visitors, while reinforcing VINS’ commitment to programs that feature hands-on learning in an outdoor setting.
