Hi Lin, thanks for the heads up.
Both my kids love purple, too. And they definitely have their own style! Outfits for both can involve Spiderman, glittery shirts and neckties. Sometimes all at once.
Yikes! I'm scared to ask if you've tried Cochran's.
We love sledding at Landry Park in Winooski. Definitely headed up there this weekend!
eeegee, thanks for pointing out our STARS feature. Kids VT ran excerpts of the STARS listings each month in 2012, along with spotlights of four and five star programs. You can find them on our website by searching for "Seeing Stars." We've highlighted many more programs than were listed in this article. The balance of our coverage of daycare providers, to this point, has actually been overwhelmingly positive.
We've put the STARS feature on hold for 2013, but we're still interested in spotlighting great childcare centers. And there are many of them out there. That's absolutely true.
The Bright Futures database is an imperfect tool for parents looking for data on childcare providers, as Ken notes in the article. It's impossible to tell which violations listed there are "serious" violations. It's also impossible to see how often a provider has been inspected. So, a provider might not have any violations for a few years, but that doesn't mean that no violations occurred. It's possible that no inspector visited since the previous violations were found -- despite the fact that state law requires annual inspections. That's not obvious to even the savvy, motivated parents using the system.
Again, the most important point of this story: Parents, ask childcare providers lots of questions. Ask them about their regulatory history. Find out how they've addressed the problems that have been found. There are great providers out there, but you have to do your homework to figure out which ones are which.
I like to watch that video on cold days to remind me that someday it'll be warm again. Sigh. Wish I could sign up for sailing camp!
I loved seeing the kids collecting their stickers! Most of the exhibitors ran out by the end, hence the passports with sharpie marks.
