Congratulations to our June Coloring Contest Winner!

Posted By on Thu, Jul 12, 2018 at 4:45 PM

Kids’ coloring contest submissions wowed our judges this month. Marley, 9, made a magical masterpiece, with a rainbow-horned unicorn prancing over a polka-dotted mushroom. Eight-year-old Alex transformed his creature into a realistic cow. Lilieve, 5, prettied up her picture with blooming flowers and a pink and purple sky. Soak up the summer sun, young artists, and send us your very best submissions this month!

The winners of annual family memberships to the Fairbanks Museum & Planetarium are…

On the steamy morning of July 7, 1777, Patriot and British troops clashed in Hubbardton, the only battle of the American Revolution fought on Vermont soil. While the Patriots were forced to retreat, the battle — with a 27% casualty and capture rate — is considered the beginning of the military end for British General John Burgoyne, who surrendered his entire army to the colonists in October.

On an equally sultry morning, 241 years later, my friend and I, along with our 13-year-olds, Gabriela and Beatrix, packed up a picnic lunch and a thermos of iced coffee to visit the Hubbardton Battlefield during its Revolutionary War Encampment Weekend. Our girls — one a middleschooler at Hazen Union in Hardwick and the other a homeschooler — are Good Citizen Challenge participants and wanted to earn more points. A trip to the battlefield is worth 10 points; a visit during the Encampment Weekend earned an additional 20-point bonus.

In our June issue, we asked kids to tell us about what they’re looking forward to doing this summer. Below, find the winning entries. Madelyn and Natalie each receive a $25 gift certificate to Crow Bookshop in Burlington.

Madelyn Myers, 11, Middlebury
Summer is a rollercoaster of fun and games
Riding our bicycles, leaving a trail of flames,
Watching a cow being milked by machines —
Summers in Vermont keeps us away from our screens.
Jumping in creeks while the water flows,
Tiny grains of rocks going in between our toes.
Enjoying a nice, cold creemee in the warm sun
Laughing and playing with my family, oh what fun!
Having hula-hoop and jump rope contests,
Jotting down your grandparents’ progress.
And last of all what summer is for
Creating memories that you never had before.

Natalie Smith, 9, Lincoln
Summertime is so much fun,
I don’t want it to ever be done.

Sitting around the outside fire,
Telling stories ’till I tire.

Running barefoot, wild and free,
Flying my kite in the summer breeze.

Spending my week away at camp,
Using fireflies as my nighttime lamp.

Sunshine and friends keep my face in a smile,
I don’t even notice when we’ve hiked five miles.

Options are endless of what to do,
But this much is true;
It’s much more fun with a friend like you!
