Vermont children can learn to ski or snowboard for less than 50 bucks this winter, but their caregivers will have to act fast to get the deal.

The Vermont Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports is subsidizing Ski Vermont’s “Take 3” Beginner Packages for 125 Vermonters 18 and under, on a first come, first served basis. The $49 package — which usually costs $129 — covers three full days on the mountain with a beginner ski or snowboard lesson, rentals and lift ticket. The lessons are geared to first-time skiers and snowboarders, with activities to make sure children have fun on the slopes.

Kids can use all three days at the same resort, or travel around the state to discover new terrain. Participating resorts include Bolton Valley, Burke Mountain, Jay Peak, Killington, Magic Mountain, Mount Snow, Pico Mountain, Smugglers’ Notch, Stratton Mountain Resort and Sugarbush.

The initiative aims to get more children active outdoors during the winter. According to Ski Vermont, learning to ski or snowboard at a young age nurtures healthier decisions and family bonds.

To get the deal, visit the council’s website and click on the link for The Vermont Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports/Ski Vermont Take 3 Beginner Package. A brief survey will pop up asking for your contact information and the number of packages you want. Fill it out, click “Done” and within 48 hours you’ll receive a message from Ski Vermont with a coupon code and instructions for purchasing your $49 package. Age limits and blackout dates vary among the resorts, so check restrictions before you make the purchase.

These subsidized packages will go fast, but if you miss the deal you can still purchase a Take 3 package for $129 from Ski Vermont. There is no age limit, so grownups can get in on the action, too.
